San Jose, CA - After a dominating victory in game one up north, the Inland Empire 66ers were given a little taste on why the San Jose Giants were first half North Division champions as San Bernardino's team fell be a 14-2 score.
The two teams combined to crush five homers, three for San Jose and two bombs by Inland Empire.
For the 66ers, Lucas May hit his 18th round-tripper of the season. May's two-run homer in game one was the difference in the 4-1 Inland Empire victory. Drew Locke was the only 66er to have a multi hit game as he raised his overall batting average to .276 with two singles. Russell Mitchell pounded his 13th home run to score the other run of the 66ers, however, they wouldn't cross home again.
The Giants had long balls clobbered by David Maroul, Mike Mooney, and Brad Boyer. The Giants would plate at least one run in the seven of the eight innings the came to the dish offensively. Four Giants had multi hit games including both Boyer and Travis Ishikawa who had three hits each.
12 of 13 San Jose's runs batted in came from the bottom half of the lineup.
Javy Guerra (5-4) took the loss for Inland Empire going four and two-third innings as he allowed seven runs on seven hits. All season the he has shown that his can strike out the opposition with ease but will walk a good number as well. It held true to form as Guerra handed out five free passes but punched out six. Georgio Martinez (5-7) earned the win lasting five frames allowing both runs while fanning five batters.
The rubber match will be held on Monday starting at 7:00 p.m. You can listen to all the action on KVCR 91.9 FM with Mike Saeger. After the team travels back they will start a three game set in Rancho Cucamonga. The Quakes won two of three games in San Bernardino last week and the 66ers will look to get some revenge on the road.
